Relay & metering panels
The panel and the grading study come from the same team, so the settings that were calculated are the settings that get applied.
Manufacturing · In short
A relay and metering panel houses the protective relays, control switches, indications and metering for a substation bay or an HT installation. Enersys Engineers manufactures these panels to the protection philosophy and relay coordination study produced by its own engineering team, with numerical relays configured, settings applied and secondary injection testing completed before dispatch.
Protection functions
- Overcurrent and earth fault, definite time and inverse definite minimum time
- Differential protection for transformers, busbars and generators
- Distance protection for transmission feeders
- Restricted earth fault and standby earth fault
- Directional overcurrent where the network permits reverse power flow
- Under/over voltage, under/over frequency and rate-of-change-of-frequency
- Breaker failure protection and trip circuit supervision
- Auto-reclose schemes where the utility requires them
Control and metering
- Breaker and isolator control with select-before-operate and interlocking
- Position indication, mimic and semaphore where specified
- Multifunction metering — current, voltage, power, energy, power factor and frequency
- Event and disturbance recording with time synchronisation
- Annunciation with first-fault indication
- Communication to SCADA over IEC 61850 or Modbus as required
The advantage of one team
On most projects the coordination study is produced by a consultant, the panel is built by a manufacturer, and the settings are applied by a commissioning contractor. Each handover is a place where a value can be transcribed wrongly — and a mis-set relay is only discovered by a fault.
Enersys runs the fault level study, performs the relay coordination, manufactures the panel and applies and tests the settings. The grading curve and the installed configuration are produced by the same organisation.
Testing before dispatch
- Relay configuration downloaded and verified against the settings schedule
- Secondary injection testing of every protection element
- Trip circuit and interlock functional checks
- Insulation resistance and high-voltage withstand
- Wiring verification against approved schematics
- Communication and time synchronisation verification
Frequently asked
Do you apply the relay settings, or just supply the panel?
Both. Settings from the coordination study are configured and verified by secondary injection before dispatch, and re-verified at site during commissioning.
Which relay makes do you work with?
Panels are built around the numerical relay make and model the customer or the utility specifies. Where the choice is open we recommend against the coordination requirement and the communication protocol the substation uses.
Can you re-coordinate protection on an existing substation?
Yes. Brownfield re-coordination after a network change — a new incomer, added generation or a revised utility fault level — is a common assignment, and is usually what stops recurrent nuisance tripping.

A substation is a sequence of devices that must coordinate exactly. Get the ratings or the grading wrong and one fault takes the whole station out.
