Thermal power plant electrical EPC

From generator terminals to the evacuation bay, and every auxiliary board that has to stay live in between.

EPC · In short

Thermal power plant electrical EPC covers everything electrical between the generator terminals and the grid, and everything that keeps the plant’s own auxiliaries running. Enersys Engineers has completed the electrical scope for captive and independent thermal plants including 2 × 12 MW, 2 × 15 MW, 2 × 30 MW, 25 MW and 40 MW captive units — covering generation voltage switchgear, unit and station auxiliary boards, synchronising, protection, cabling, earthing, illumination and commissioning.

Electrical scope

  • Generator circuit breaker, neutral grounding and generation voltage switchgear
  • Unit auxiliary and station auxiliary transformers, and their protection
  • HT and LT auxiliary distribution boards — PCC, PMCC and MCC
  • Synchronising panels and auto-synchronising schemes
  • DC system, battery, battery charger and UPS
  • Emergency diesel generator interface and changeover scheme
  • Complete plant cabling, cable trays, trenches and terminations
  • Plant earthing grid, lightning protection and step-and-touch verification
  • Plant illumination, area lighting and emergency lighting
  • Switchyard interface up to the evacuation point

Balance-of-plant electrical systems

A thermal plant is a collection of auxiliary systems that each have their own drives, controls and protection. Getting these right is what determines availability once the plant is running.

  • Coal, lignite and fuel handling plant electrics and drives
  • Ash handling plant electrics
  • Water treatment, DM plant and cooling water system electrics
  • Compressed air, fire fighting and hydrogen or hypochlorite plant supplies where present
  • Variable voltage variable frequency drives for fans, pumps and mills
  • Cooling tower and CW pump house distribution

Studies that precede the design

Nothing is specified before the numbers exist. The fault level study sets the switchgear ratings; the relay coordination study sets the protection settings; the motor starting study confirms the auxiliary system can restart the plant.

  • Fault level and fault MVA study across the auxiliary network
  • Relay coordination and protection grading, including grading with the utility upstream
  • Load flow and motor starting / voltage dip study
  • Earthing grid design and step-and-touch potential verification
  • Harmonic study for drive-heavy auxiliary systems

Questions

Frequently asked

Does Enersys supply the boiler and turbine?

No. Enersys takes the electrical scope — from generator terminals through auxiliary distribution to the evacuation interface — and integrates with the BTG supplier’s package. This is the scope split used on every thermal project we have delivered.

What size of thermal plant do you work on?

Delivered projects range from 2 × 12 MW captive units to 40 MW captive power plants and a 25 MW plant. The team’s wider experience through the Managing Director extends to seven power plant projects across the generation, transmission and distribution sectors.

Do you handle the plant’s statutory energisation approvals?

Yes. Electrical inspectorate approval, DISCOM coordination and load despatch registration are handled as part of the statutory liaisoning scope, run in parallel with construction.
